Professional Development Council Members 07-08: Adam Galvin (chair), Tina Libsack (secretary) , Barb Robinson ,  Melisa Clute

Board Approved: 6-9-08

Overview:

The school’s professional development policy requires an adopted professional development plan for the subsequent school year based on the recommendation of the advisory committee. The plan outlines how, when and from whom teachers and specialist shall meet their professional development PIR day expectations. The plan must be filed with OPI and made available to employees and the public.

Requirements:

During the 08-09 school year, Arrowhead School District 75 will use this plan to meet its requirement for seven PIR days, three of those dedicated exclusively to professional development. The plan calls for two PIR days on August 27 & 28 (before school), two PIR days on October 16 & 17 (professional development), two half PIR days on December 4 & 6 (parent-teacher conferences), one PIR day on March 6 (professional development) and one PIR day on June 6 (after school).

August 27 & 28 (before school)

The two before school PIR days will include welcomes, review of employment expectations, review of employment documents, review behavior management/school rules, safety training, substitute training, collaboration on intervention & extended curriculum planning/scheduling and organizational time.

October 16 & 17 (MEA days)

There is a possibility the Park County Special Education COOP will organize a training on Differentiated Instruction techniques for classroom teachers or some other similar offing in Livingston as they have in be past few years. Additionally teachers will have the option of attending the state MEA convention offerings.

December 6 & 7 (p/t conferences)

Parent teacher conferences are scheduled from 1:50-6:50 on 12-6 and from 1:50-4:50 on 12-7.

March 6 This professional development opportunity is dedicated to providing continuous training in math interventions as well as SBR based curriculum tools and programs which have contributed so greatly to our improvement and continued success in recent years.  Offerings may also include the following areas: OCR, Everyday Math, Wilson , LIPS, Smartboard, Technology Integration, Extended Curriculum and DIBELS.

June 6 (after school)

This after school PIR day will include classroom inventory and checkout, final staff and individual staff member meetings, initial scheduling planning for next year, assessment of classroom needs for the coming year, etc.

Additional Plans:

Arrowhead will go beyond the seven required PIR days to include professional development opportunities into our calendar. Students will be released early every Friday for teachers to engage in professional development, curriculum planning, and instructional management opportunities. These sessions are scheduled for 2 hours but may be extended by offering stipends for additional hours worked.

Top priority training and preparation time during the next school year will be given to Indian Education, Extended Curriculum, and Smart Board lesson planning.

Our staff has read, 2 + 2 Performance Appraisal Model; Collaborative Peer Coaching That Improves Instruction by Allen and Leblanc.  This model was implemented by our entire teaching staff during the 07-08 school year in which each teacher did at least one observation. This was positive experience and may be repeated in the spring of 09, time permitting.  Doing more than one round of observations per year has proved difficult to accomplish.

In addition to the aforementioned planned professional development opportunities we may offer professional development as needed throughout the year in the following areas: technology, LETRS, OCR, Everyday Math, LiPS, WILSON, Step-Up to Writing, social studies curriculum development, GATE Programming, Indian Education, differentiated instruction, etc. Teachers will also be permitted to swap specifically Montana Reading Institute, Math Magic, and Montana Rural Schools Association summer conference training for MEA days according to policy. During the summer of 2008 extra duty hours for professional preparation may be approved as needed for new staff to get ready for next year. Returning staff will be permitted extra duty contract time to collaborate and integrate planning with new staff.
